The Design Museum is planning to move to the Exhibition Hall of the former Commonwealth Institute complex in 2014. Internal redesign of the building will be undertaken by John Pawson. From November, the site will close ready for its transformation into the new Design Museum, so this will be one of the very last opportunities to see the original 1962 interior.
As part of this move, the Museum is organising a discussion forum for HE design students, and would like to talk to HE design students from a range of disciplines – including architecture. Design students with dyslexia are especially welcome to participate.
The consultation will begin with a private tour of the former Commonwealth Institute and a discussion of plans for the site, then move to a nearby venue for tea and in-depth discussion of how the museum can work best for architecture students in its future home. It is expected the consultation will last for two hours maximum and that approximately twelve students will participate.
The Design Musem are particularly interested in consulting with design students with dyslexia because the Museum currently has no specialist support in place for visitors with dyslexia. We would like to find out more about what we could do to make the museum as it is now and the new Design Museum on Kensington High Street more welcoming for visitors with dyslexia.
This consultation is one event within a programme which has included Kensington and Chelsea residents, school teachers, young people, disabled visitors and professional designers. Each participating student will receive £15 in high street shopping vouchers and free tickets to the Design Museum to thank them for their time.
Places for this event are limited and must be booked.
