syllabus changes

The RIBA have updated and rewritten the outline syllabus for architectural education in the UK. This affects all students of architecture and will come into effect from September 2002.

Changes to parts 1 and 2 syllabuses include a new professional experience and development record to replace the traditional logbook (this can be viewed at www.pedr.co.uk). Pages for the old style logbooks will however still be available until 2005. In general the syllabus attempts to describe the aims of each stage of architectural education and set a series of minimum criteria.

For example, part 1 is described as a time when 'design is built from creativity and informed by specific skills and knowledge in core subject areas.

The overall aim is to develop professional attitudes and integrative skills'. Part 2's aim is to 'expand upon the integrated design learnt during Part 1 and lead to achieving a rounded potential in the student's subsequent working career to successfully contribute to and lead, in the design and construction of architecture and the environment'.

Changes to the Part 3 syllabus are more detailed with 4 main points: the introduction of the electronic professional experience and development record, an updated and strengthened syllabus, an updated examination structure including a national domain specific examination and increased support and training of professional practice examiners.
