VICTORIAN VALUES

WRONG! The Part 1/2/3 structure was set in place in 1883.

This establishes a set of Victorian Values at the heart of our contemporary educational and professional culture. These can be summarised as:

1. The gentleman architect-hero building one-off masterpieces for an educated patron

2. The profession overseeing education, so that architecture becomes a closed and self-referential system

3. Both the profession and education are established as elite strongholds, isolated in their fixed (and pretty strange) view of the world

This sets in place a very particular image for the architect. It is this image that education still aims for; the forms may have gone from neo-gothic to blobby, but the values remain.
