change the face of construction

www.change-construction.org

is a practical programme to help improve day-to-day working conditions through positive action to encourage greater diversity in the workforce. A key task is to identify and promote innovative organisations, as well as to present a more diverse, representative and human face of construction. This website has been set up as a communications network to provide information, share ideas and encourage good practice. Most importantly, Change the face of construction is here to give a voice for all those who enjoy working in the industry, helping to improve working practice, supporting the concept of Respect for people and generally raising the image of construction. The need has never been greater for construction to change its culture in order to recruit and retain more of the right people. The skills shortage is growing, competition for good men and women is intensifying and there is concern over the failure to attract sufficient young people into the construction industry.

Change the face of construction is a programme managed by the Construction Industry Board (CIB) in alliance with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). It is a practical programme that makes the most of existing initiatives, draws upon good practice in other industry sectors and seeks to move ahead on issues that are not being addressed -underpinned by demonstrating the business case for increasing the number of under-represented groups.

citb

the CITB has a programme to better understand and improve the recruitment and retention of under-represented groups. This programme was defined in part by its report on ethnic minorities in the industry. The report, by the Royal Holloway College, was launched with a major conference in the summer of 1999. The CITB's support of Change the face of construction is motivated by a desire for practical action under the banner Respect for people CITB the Construction Industry Training Board. CITB's mission statement is 'to promote and facilitate the training of sufficient people in the skills needed for a world-class construction industry'. www.citb.org.uk has many links to other employment agencies, recruitment consultants, private practsies, learning resource centres.
